Podcasts are the kind of thing most of us have heard of, even if we don’t listen. Many of the most popular things to listen to can only be found in podcast form.
Since they have become more common, there are countless apps to help us find and listen, but not all of them are easy to understand. Google has been down this road before and is trying again.
They’ve released an app that’s simply called “Google Podcasts,” and it’s a great option for Android users who want to dive into podcasts but want to avoid confusion. It’s light on the bells and whistles, but if you’re only interested in listening to shows, it’s not a bad option.
Here’s how to use it
First, keep in mind that the app only works for Android. To start, you will need to go to the Play Store and download it. Just search for “Google Podcasts” and, once you find it, download it as you would any other application.
Once downloaded, the icon will appear on your home screen. Tap on it to open it.
The first screen you’ll see will be a home page that displays icons for what Google says are the most popular or trending podcasts. Shows can have all kinds of themes – it really depends on what everyone is listening to at the time.
And, if you’re looking for a specific podcast, click the magnifying glass in the upper left corner to open a search bar. Just type the name and find it.
From there, you can scroll up and down to see different sections, all of which will display various podcasts. You’ll find politics, sports, society and culture and other categories, all with popular choices within them presented right on screen.
Tap any of them to open a different page, one with a more in-depth look at the podcast you’ve chosen. It provides the name of the podcast, its hosts, and a brief summary of what to expect.
If this sounds interesting to you, hit the blue “Subscribe” button to make sure you get new episodes as they come out.
On this screen you will also see older episodes, which you can listen to by clicking on the circle with the triangle pointing to the right.
And that’s about it!
One of the best parts of Google Podcasts is its simplicity. Some people might want more frills in the app, but this one is for someone who is only focused on finding and listening to podcasts.
It’s easy to understand and pretty to sort through, without too much confusing or technical stuff. For many people, it’s a welcome breath of fresh air in a world where apps tend to offer way more than we need in ways that are hard to understand.
