Spotify buys crime podcast company Parcast

Spotify’s chief content officer, Dawn Ostroff, reiterated the company’s ambition to “become the world’s leading audio platform” by announcing the acquisition of its third podcasting company this year.

The Swedish music streaming company’s latest acquisition is Podcast studio Parcast, which specializes in mystery, crime, science fiction and history content.

Last month, Spotify acquired Gimlet Media, a New York and Anchor-based podcast production company, whose software “makes it easy for anyone to create, distribute, and monetize a podcast” for around $ 300 million.

Parcast was founded in 2016 and has launched 18 premium podcast series, including Serial Killers, Unsolved Murders, Cults and Conspiracy Theories, and the studio’s first fiction series, Mind’s Eye.

The company will bring its curated library of shows to Spotify and has over 20 new shows slated for launch later this year.

The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2019 and subject to customary closing conditions.
