Spotify acquires Australian podcast company Whooshkaa

Australia-based podcast service, Whooshkaa was bought by Spotify, but specific terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Whooshkaa’s innovative technology makes it easier and faster for broadcasters to transform their existing audio content into on-demand podcast content.

This technology will soon be integrated into Spotify’s podcast and enterprise advertising platform megaphone, enabling radio publishers to realize the full potential of podcasts with Megaphone’s best suite of hosting, distribution, reporting and monetization tools.

Founder and CEO of Whooshka, Rob Loewenthal, the former 2GB director, who was one of Australia’s industry leaders who saw the potential of catch-up audio and podcasting early on, has ambitions to grow the brand’s service through the agreement.

“We launched Whooshkaa to give creators access to a cost-effective, end-to-end audio management platform that would help bring audio into the digital age,” Rob said.

“Now it’s time to take our audio technology to the next level.”

Chief Content & Advertising Business Officer at Spotify, Dawn Ostroff, says: “We believe that the global growth potential of digital audio is still largely untapped. With the addition of these new tools and the innovative team supporting them, we are strengthening our commitment to helping creators, publishers and advertisers realize the value of this opportunity. »

“With Whooshkaa, we will strengthen our efforts to help audio publishers of all kinds grow their podcast business and expand our ability to help advertisers reach their audiences.”

In the meantime, Loewenthal says Whooshkaa users won’t be disturbed as the team works on integration with Megaphone.

“While we work on integrating with Megaphone, we will continue to operate as usual with all Whooshkaa products still available,” he said.

“We would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and partnership with us over the past 5 years. It is thanks to all of you that we have been able to build and advance our mission to improve the creation and distribution sound.

“We wouldn’t be here without you.”
