Social podcast app IsItGood wins $100,000 at Accelerate Baltimore pitch party

Mark McTamney listens to a lot of podcasts and looks for more. But like many people, he mainly discovered new offers by word of mouth. Along with music, movies, and books, there are apps and websites to turn to for reviews and personalized recommendations.
That’s not the case for podcasts, said McTamney, who worked for Parking Panda for six years as chief marketing officer. This surprised him given the growth of the medium and the sheer volume of podcasts. And people were already sharing, albeit through more limited channels.
“I realized there was this social element,” he said, but couldn’t find any reference sources.
This is what McTamney offers with Is it good. On Tuesday, he won $100,000 from the Abell Foundation to Accelerate BaltimoreThe investor pitch evening. The event marked the closing of the 12-week accelerator run by ETC.

Along with a place to listen to podcasts, the app features a feed for listeners to share podcasts and check what their friends are listening to, as well as share on other social platforms. It also uses an algorithm to learn tastes and offer recommendations.
McTamney launched the app after leaving Parking Panda last summer, following the Baltimore company’s acquisition by SpotHero. He got a boost after a DC Startup Weekend event in the fall, and McTamney entered AccelerateBaltimore earlier this year with plans to continue growing.
The funding will provide a big boost to development efforts for the app, which is in private beta (Find sign up on their website). Going forward, McTamney said he plans to hire a lead developer and the plan is to search locally. It is targeting a launch in the fourth quarter.
