Podcast Company Paradiso Media Completes Series A Funding Round

The French leader in podcast production Paradiso Media has finalized a series A round table to continue its international development, strengthen its workforce and continue to produce more film and television adaptations.

Although Paradiso Media did not disclose the amount of the funding round, a source close to the company said a total of 5 million euros ($ 5.9 million) had been raised.

Founded in 2019 by Lorenzo Benedetti, Louis Daboussy and Benoit Dunaigre, Paradiso Media called on new major investors, including Swen Capital Partners, Alliance Entreprendre and the French Tech Acceleration Fund of Bpifrance.

Paradiso Media recently delivered “Love Under Lockdown”, an intimate and narrative podcast that was nominated for a 2021 Webby Award in the “Best Documentary Podcast: Limited Series” category. His latest productions include “A Gay in the Life” with Garrett Clayton and writer Blake Knight, whose star-studded wedding ceremony was chaired by Alicia Silverstone. The series is available exclusively on Spotify Greenroom and launches today at 5 p.m. PT.

Paradiso Media’s angel investors include successful executives in the French audiovisual landscape, including Rodolphe Belmer, the former CEO of Canal Plus Group who now heads Eutelsat; Pierre-Antoine Capton, CEO of Mediawan; Grégory Dray, Google Kids manager, family entertainment and education in the EMEA zone; Julien Leroux, CEO of Paper Entertainment who previously worked at Cineflix; and the production company Iconoclast.

Lorenzo Benedetti (pictured with Emi Norris), who previously founded Studio Bagel and headed digital production for Canal Plus Group, said Paradiso Media is entering a new stage in its development after two active years of steady growth.

“Thanks to the support of our angel investors, we are the leader in the competitive French podcasting market and we are firmly establishing ourselves in the United States thanks to our quality programming and our growing audience,” said Benedetti, who has partnered with in Daboussy, the former CCO of Konbini, and Benoit Dunaigre, former Havas executive, to launch Paradiso Media.

Benedetti said the group’s new backers will enable the brand to implement an “international and multi-format strategy” and ensure that its “projects are heard, and ultimately seen, by the world”.

Xavier Le Blan of SWEN Capital Partners said: “Paradiso is perfectly positioned to conquer this market thanks to its knowledge of talent, creativity, intuition and established presence in the sector.

Clémence Rousselet, from the ICC division of Bpifrance, underlined “Paradiso is currently the only French podcast studio to display real international ambition”.

“We quickly identified Paradiso Media as a real incubator of talents and stories adaptable to the audiovisual medium”, specifies Antoine Bodet of Alliance Entreprendre.

Benedetti noted that the company’s DNA has always been to create podcasts that could easily be adapted into film and television content.

Paradiso Media’s development pipeline includes films and TV adaptations based on its French-language limited-series podcasts, including the coming-of-age documentary “Mes 14 ans” with Brut, the thriller “Chosen” with Mediawan Group and the family drama “In Tongs at the foot of the Himalayas” with Cinéfrance Studio. Paradiso Media also recently launched its #ShootThePodcast initiative, a podcast co-development program in partnership with key audiovisual and film production companies.

The studio has produced more than 20 podcasts to date in France and the United States in partnership with Spotify, Audible, Deezer, Sybel and Stitcher. Paradiso’s podcast library now totals over 100 hours of audio programming in English, Spanish, German and France, and receives over one million downloads per month.

The company has more than 35 employees in Paris and Los Angeles, including Emi Norris, Managing Director of Paradiso Media US, and Molly O’Keefe, who was recently appointed Head of Development. O’Keefe was previously Senior Director of Artist Programs at the Tribeca Film Institute and Head of Development and Production at Sundance Productions and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour. Other recent hires include Yael Even Or, who recently served as a senior producer at Audible. Even Or will work alongside Norris and O’Keefe to produce Paradiso’s second original English-language podcast, “Seventeen,” written and voiced by acclaimed journalist Laura Leigh Abby.

Paradiso Media’s strong development roster also includes several children’s podcasts, a sports fashion podcast in partnership with MACRO Television Studios, and a global unscripted podcast development partnership with Ubisoft for three of their major video game franchises.
