Podcast company hopes to digitize massive WMMS archive

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Wessler Media isn’t done with WMMS yet. After launching its “The Wrath of the Buzzard” podcast series on the legendary Cleveland radio station, the Columbus-based production company is looking to preserve an important part of the WMMS.

Wessler president Vince Tornero has launched a fundraiser through GoFundMe in hopes of restoring an archive of nearly 100 8-track tapes. The recordings, donated by a Cleveland resident, feature vintage WMMS air traffic controls, promos, commercials and other live recordings from the station’s glory days of the 1970s and 1980s.

The audio features legendary WMMS disc jockeys like Jeff and Flash, Matt the Cat, Murray Saul, Denny Sanders, Kid Leo, Billy Bass and many more. Wessler is looking to raise $4,000 with the money for parts and labor to restore each 8-track tape, then digitize the audio to create an online archive. You can donate HERE.

Tornero and Wessler are also hosting a final live version of his podcast series at the Music Box Supper Club in Cleveland’s Flats on Thursday. The show, which is free (reservation required), will feature WMMS personalities Sanders, Bass, John Gorman, Ed “Flash” Ferenc and David Spero.
