Podcasts are getting more and more popular day by day and this popular podcast app is turning to the Spotify model to get more people to listen.
Pocket Casts is a popular podcast platform offering a selection of over 700,000 podcasts from the world’s top creators. They pride themselves on their abilities to find new favorites through podcast recommendations and hand-curated discovery tools. They can now pride themselves on giving everything away for free.
The app was available for a one-time cost of $ 3.99, or more if you wanted to use their desktop app. Now, they’ve removed the payment wall so that the app is completely free, but with the option to upgrade to Premium for $ 0.99 per month or $ 10 per year. Users who have purchased the app in the past get 3 years free.
Their new premium subscription, Pocket Casts Plus, offers access on any device or platform. It comes with 10GB of cloud storage for users to download audio and video, as well as exclusive app icons and themes. They hope cloud storage will be particularly attractive for podcast makers to watch footage and shows before posting.
In a press release, Pocket Casts CEO Owen Grover said, “In today’s rapidly changing audio landscape, it’s important that we stand up for free and open access – not walled gardens – to expand the medium while providing the best listening experience in the world.
The app was launched in 2010 and has grown a lot since then with a dedicated fan base and millions of downloads. Back then, freemium models weren’t the norm they were today, and developers had to take charge. The change in their payment process represents a culture change but also represents the growth of Pocket Casts over the past decade.
