Ex-Slate EIC, Malcolm Gladwell to Launch Podcast Company

Jacob Weisberg, who surprised the digerati by resigning as chairman and editor of the Slate Group, has raised the curtain a bit on the new podcast company he is launching with bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell.

“I’m interested in positioning podcasts beyond advertising,” he told Media Ink. “I think there’s no question that people will pay for podcasts. I have a broad view of the issue in terms of expanding media, ”he said. His new company does not yet have a name.

He started Panoply Media as a separate podcast division within Slate several years ago and for a few years spent most of his energy there producing 100 shows.

In his surprise Twitter announcement on Wednesday, he said: “After 22 years I’m leaving Slate to start a new audio company with Malcolm @Gladwell. We will create a revisionist history, a broken record and much more.

Weisberg joined Slate in 1996 shortly after its launch by Microsoft and founding editor Michael Kinsley.

He then moved to EIC and helped organize its sale to the Washington Post Co. and stayed with it after the Graham family sold the newspaper to Jeff Bezos of Amazon, but kept Slate as part of Graham Holdings. . Slate, like many journalism-based web businesses, has failed to generate long-term profits, sources said.

Weisberg has said he won’t start serious fundraising for the new venture, which he calls a “boutique audio content company,” until next month, when he officially leaves Slate.
